The Monster Squad (1987) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 137

Day 137 of the challenge! The Monster Squad is the best and worst of 80's "kids on bikes" movies. When it works, The Monster Squad is an exciting and magical movie full of laughs and practical monster effects that can't help but fill your heart with joy (my sentiments anyway). It's like a smaller and less developed version of The Goonies. But unlike The Goonies, there are too many issues with the characters to let me fully enjoy what's supposed to be a fun and cheesy time.

I can get past all the inexplicable story choices (where did Dracula get that car? Why does he have a car for that matter? Why don't people believe in monsters when there are crates filled with Frankensteins and Wolf-men walking around, etc.) because that's not the point. Its a fun ride that doesn't want to get bogged down by explaining all the little details that ultimately don't matter. What I can't get past are the many interesting character quirks and storylines that are introduced, but quickly forgotten or resolved without any development on them. Things just kind of happen and the characters react accordingly. It's still a charming 80s flick, but it's not the best.
