Day 156 of the challenge! Think back to the first time a horror movie ever left you shaking long after it was over. I'd imagine you were a kid that wasn't emotionally ready to watch something like The Exorcist or A Nightmare on Elm Street or some other classic. I experienced that once when I was 8, and I didn't experience it again...until last night. I'm happy to say Hereditary is one of the scariest and most messed up movies I have ever seen. It takes a lot to shake a horror junkie like me, but Hereditary pulled it off nicely.
The film has a very familiar horror setup with a family experiencing a loss, but quickly takes a rapid left turn into something fresh and unexpected. You can't shake the sense of dread and terror this "family drama" has to offer the genre, with many well utilized homages to the other horror films that inspired it. The final 10 minutes are sure to chill even the hardiest of horror fans.
Hereditary is further supported by an Oscar worthy performance by Toni Collette and some INCREDIBLE "tilt shift" cinematography that enhances the many thematic layers being played with in the film. I can go on and on with the film (and can't wait for more people to see it), but for now all I can say is PROCEED WITH CAUTION if you plan on watching it later this week.
