Day 18 of the challenge! Godzilla: Planet of Monsters FINALLY arrived in the US via Netflix. Loved the new direction and the different approach to Godzilla here, but can't help but feel like it ended right as it was getting good.
I'm a Godzilla junkie. I'm a huge fan of the giant atomic monster and the themes it's represented over it's 60+ years in the pop culture zeitgeist. I'm also open minded and love new approaches to familiar concepts. That being said, this film was a bit of a chore to get through, with most of the exciting bits happening in the last 20 minutes or so. Imagine my annoyance when it finally started to get rolling, only to end on a cliffhanger setting up part 2...Ugh! I love slow burning plots as much as the next geek, but this was too much (especially for a plot that's basically Attack on Titan).
On the flip side, I loved that this new film embraced the weird sci-fi elements as much as it did. If you're going to be different, go all out! As much of a chore as the majority was, I love the world presented to us. All past films have shown Godzilla invading our human civilization while symbolizing some sort of theme about the arrogance of mankind. This film flips that and has humans invading a world long dominated and changed by Godzilla's presence. Since this film was the first of a planned trilogy, I'm excited to see where they take it next now that all the exposition and world building is out of the way. Especially after that impressive finally!
Day 18 out, 348 to go....
Quick note:
- Not a huge fan of the animation style here. Usually I'm a fan of cell shading, but this particular style seemed kind of bland to me.
- This film totally played out like a video game boss fight.
