They're Watching (2016) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 299

Day 299 of the challenge! They're Watching had an interesting enough start. Then that ending happened…

It’s a familiar setup: Rude Americans (in this case, a home improvement show crew) running around Eastern Europe getting terrorized by superstitious locals. Nothing new, but They’re Watching manages to make things feel a little fresher than you would expect from a found footage horror like it.

We’re given enough character moments with each member of the group to make us care about their inevitable doom (something I really appreciated, considering I usually couldn’t care less about characters in a found footage horror), whilst also adding some fun to the general vibe. And then the ending happens…

Imagine The Blair Witch Project, but instead of ending on an obscure and terror fueled moment, the witch shows up (wearing a nice cardigan to boot) and turns Super Saiyan before proceeding to slaughter all the locals. That description works A LOT better than you’d think. All the tension built up to that point is thrown out the window in favor of a TERRIBLE CG rampage that might have been campy fun in a different movie. Here, it just makes you feel like you wasted a good 80 minutes.

Damn shame.
