Day 218 of the challenge! The Lawnmower Man is really hard to watch, and I'm not talking about the dated visual effects. Nothing to do with King's short story as well.
Liked:
I'm impressed by what The Lawnmower Man got right about where virtual reality is now. The movie adds a horror/sci-fi spin on things obviously, but VR being used to enhance human experiences, education, and give new perspective to things isn't too far off from reality.
Some really creepy shots and moments sprinkled in throughout the running time.
I can see why this film became so iconic. It came right at the start of the VR revolution, and the visual effects (as dated as they are) are interesting to look at (mostly).
Didn't like:
This movie has nothing to do with Stephen King's short story. Minus sharing one scene and a few references, the film is it's own beast. They don't even share the same concepts or themes. I'm okay with reimagining a story, but c'mon. Why call it The Lawnmower Man at all?
There's not much to really enjoy about the writing. All the characters are one dimensional and unlikable for the most part, the plot is predictable, and it's just not all that scary.
