The Devil and Father Amorth (2018) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 130

Day 130 of the challenge! As a hardcore fan of The Exorcist (both the novel and film), and being a connoisseur of dark and weird urban legends and such,  I had been looking forward to The Devil and Father Amorth since I first heard of it a few months ago. I was lucky enough to catch a special showing (the only one scheduled) at my local Alamo Drafthouse, and the results are...mixed.

The Devil and Father Amorth does a great job at setting up it's point (is demonic possession real?) with plenty of interesting perspective from both religious and medical professionals, but quickly loses the little momentum it built up by not following up or building upon any of those perspectives. Why show us an MRI of a brain if you're not going to show us an MRI of a "possessed" brain for example. A lot of telling and little showing (in one frustrating case, quite literally).

The films biggest draw, an actual "real" exorcism, is just as fascinating as it is unnerving to watch. Incredibly tame compared to most Hollywood depictions of possessions, it's not enough to convince people on opposite sides of the argument, but familiar enough to chill you a bit nonetheless (assuming the footage and audio wasn't enhanced in post). The low production value of the documentary might also hinder the experience for some. Either way, I recommend it if you get a chance. Why not right?
