The Brood (1979) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 277

Day 277 of the challenge! Another day, another Cronenberg flick, another 90 minutes of me yelling “WTF".” Thanks The Brood.

So far on my long fall down the Cronenberg rabbit hole of body oddities, we’ve gotten a cautionary tale of about STDs, but framed as an armpit vampire/zombie movie. Then we got more zombies, but these were more sex crazed, and played on sexual anxiety and taboo fears. Now with The Brood, we got… the emotional damage children of divorce or abuse struggle with, but in a story where their emotional stress manifests itself physically in the form of mutant, blood lusting, superhuman children (that like to use hammers). Fun! There’s also some light satirizing of how helpful (or not) therapists are in helping people get past these issues. Somehow a little more grounded when put in a context with armpit vampires and rape zombies.

Does it work? For the most part, but like all Cronenberg movies, not for everyone. Goes without saying at this point…
