Prom Night (1980) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 274

Day 274 of the challenge and Happy first day of Halloween! Starting October off right with a Jamie Lee Curtis classic: Prom Night! They remade this a few years back right?

Technically an 80s horror movie, but feeling more in line with the unforgiving and exploitational vibes found in horror films from the 70s, Prom Night is a soft focused, slow cooking revenge thriller, set to a jammin’ disco album.

You could shave off about 20 minutes of this film if you take out all the disco dance sequences and broll. Not that I hated them (pretty catchy tunes if I’m honest hehe), but annoying when you want to get back on track with the (arguably) already slow slasher story. So the pacing is terrible is what I’m trying to say. It’s also hard to get invested with any of the characters, so the extra slow pacing and extended dance offs only made it that much harder.

On the plus side, I totally dug the surprise inclusion of Leslie Nielsen in this. Totally not used to seeing him in non-comedic roles. So if you’re not a Leslie Nielsen, Jamie Lee Curtis, or disco fan, I can’t see Prom Night being too appealing for most outside the cult horror zeitgeist. I dig it, but admit to it’s shortcomings.
