Day 162 of the challenge! Lizzie Borden Took an Ax was underwhelming to say the least. I knew something was wrong not too long into the film when modern day...country rock?? music started playing over the late 1800's visuals on the screen. Juxtaposing modern with old can sometimes work wonders and create a unique feel, but that was not the case here. That, along with the cringy dialogue, made me suddenly feel like I was watching a Lifetime movie (and I found out later that it actually was produced by Lifetime as a TV movie pilot for a miniseries back in 2015, so ugh).
All that aside, Lizzie Borden Took an Ax feels like a bad episode of Law and Order (or your favorite crime drama of choice). The drama is flat and there's no character work to be found. Why did Lizzie do what she did? What was her mental state? Motivations? Was she just a moody teen like individual that got bored like the movie seems to imply? Who knows, and after watching, who cares? The Wikipedia article on the case is more engaging. Just read that.
