Final day of the challenge! WHOO, I DID IT! Ending things on a great, but bittersweet note with Kill the Messenger.
Figures I chose to end the challenge with a movie where the main character ruins his life in pursuit of finishing something he started. All kidding aside though, Kill the Messenger is a very intense film with a lot to say about telling the truth and what it sometimes costs.
An adaptation of journalist Gary Webb’s real life mission to expose the truth of the CIA’s involvement in Contra cocaine trafficking in the 90’s (and partially based on Webb’s own book, which itself is based on his original investigative series), Kill the Messenger is a strangely topical film in the era of fake news. Webb’s struggle to keep the integrity of his story intact whilst dealing with opposition from both the US government and fellow journalists makes for a compelling story, one that seems more important today than ever before, even if it ultimately doesn’t end the way you might want it to.
Aside, if you’re on the fence about Jeremy Renner’s acting abilities (I don’t know why you would be at this point, the man’s an incredible actor), I’d bet money that Kill the Messenger would change your mind. He totally nails it as Webb. If anything, just watch it for him.
That about does it y’all! 365 movies and 365 cinemagraphs. Can’t believe I was able to pull it off! I’ll be continuing this creative challenge in a different way (more on that in tomorrow’s epilogue post), but for now, thanks for everyone’s support (you know who you are) and a Happy 2019! Be safe and May the Force be with you! Time for a stiff drink and a nap.
