Day 350 of the challenge! Funny People is hilarious, real, and painful to watch. Loved it.
You know how they say the funniest people are also the saddest? Or how comedy is tragedy? The feelings behind those sayings and others like them are the driving force behind Funny People, and for that reason alone I can see Funny People not being everyone’s cup of tea. It’s not the silly feel good comedy you’re probably expecting from a film directed by Judd Apatow, and one starring Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen no less (and Leslie Mann too of course).
Rather, Funny People is a film for those that are able to see the comedy and humor in the many harsh realities of our daily lives, which is easier said than done I admit. As a general rule of thumb, people like to watch comedies to escape from all that baggage for a few hours, not to be confronted by it. Basically, you need to have a dark sense of humor, and then some because Funny People pushed it a bit even for me. Still, I admire the movie for not sugarcoating anything. It’s mature, emotional, and despite everything, it’s still pretty damn funny.
