Day 6 was...interesting to say the least. Surprise, it wasn't the fourth Insidious! After a few planning fails, I decided to save Insidious for later and finally catch Downsizing while it was still in theaters. That's where it gets interesting.
I remember getting excited when I first saw the trailer for Downsizing. I'm a huge fan of Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig and Christoph Waltz after all. Throw them all into a quirky and weird sci-fi trailer about shrinking people, and I was instantly sold! Downsizing was marketed mainly as a sci-fi/comedy b-movie, and it totally started that way. But then it ends up turning into an odd (and horribly misguided) socioeconomic commentary with a heavy dose of environmentalism that took itself WAY too seriously. If that wasn't bad enough, Downsizing finally settles on a out of nowhere "end of the world" story to finish it off.
I wanted to like Downsizing, but it's just too tonally off and "on the nose" with the topics it tries to make you engage with. It keeps telling us how bad things are, but never shown. Good for a few laughs in the first half I guess.
Day 6 out, 359 to go....
