Day 142 of the challenge! Desolation's character driven simplicity and realistic old school charm make it work. There's a lot to dig about Desolation if you like slow burning thrillers. The two female leads are easily the strongest part of the film, giving you two, very real feeling characters to care about. Nothing feels artificial or forced, making their plight that much harder to watch.
On the down side, people looking for some heavy scares will be disappointed. There's some great and chilling cinematography to be found (especially anytime the mysterious hiker's red sunglasses glitter in the darkness of the woods like demonic eyes), but overall the horror movie atmosphere is very tame.
