Day 180 of the challenge! Beatriz at Dinner was such a frustrating watch, mostly for all the wrong reasons.
Liked:
- Salma Hayek and John Lithgow steal the show as characters that are the polar opposites of each other.
- Great visual film. We're shown what kind of people Beatriz and Strutt are rather than told.
Unsure?:
- Very politically driven (which is fine) but VERY on the nose about it. The film screams its messages at you to make sure you don't miss it.
Didn't like:
- Everything else is secondary to Salma and John is this film. The plot is basically nonexistent and the other characters just work to set a context for them without being interesting themselves. Everything is set up to feel like a confrontation between someone from MSNBC and Fox News.
- I'm told this is a comedy, but the sincerity of everything (as outrageous as it might be) isn't that funny to me. I laughed occasionally more from the frustration than finding something legitimately funny.
