Day 195 of the challenge! A.I. Artificial Intelligence is an interesting and emotional sci-fi fairy-tale mishmash. Weird, but strangely works.
Liked:
The fairy-tale approach gives the movie a great sense of awe as everything unfolds from David's naive perspective. Using Pinocchio as both a narrative framework and metaphor works wonders (even if it's a bit on the nose).
Somehow, Spielberg managed to create a multi-genre story that includes: A family drama, a cyberpunk mystery, a "Mad Max-ian"apocalypse, the fairy-tale I keep up mentioning, and a high concept cerebral sci-fi. I feel I'm missing some...It's a little wonky at times, but the film stays together well.
The history of this movie's journey to the screen would make an interesting documentary. Maybe there's one on the DVD or Blu-Ray I don't know about? I should find out...
I may or may not have cried...
Didn't like:
- We're not given a chance to fully explore the world of this universe. We're told that resources and over population is an issue, but never see the affects of this. The same goes with how most people integrate "mechas" into their lives. Outside the "Thunderdome" or seedy parts of town of course. A lot of hints and mentions, but not enough showing.
Not central to the plot, but some more context to Joe's situation might have been nice. Maybe that's still just a problem of that "telling and not showing" problem.
