1922 (2017) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 49

Day 49 of the challenge! Finishing off part 2 of my weekend Netflix/Stephen King double feature with 1922. Again, I didn't read the book (or 131 page novella in this case), and I (again) regret it deeply because 1922 was such a creepy, slow burning ride. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, and the slow burn does feel like a drag at time, but the final 30 minutes are well worth it!

1922 is a good ol' fashioned "tell tale heart" situation where someone commits a heinous murder and slowly loses their mind over the guilt with the assistance of some sort of ghostly haunting after the fact. Thomas Jane carries the film well as this character (even though the story makes him jump to murder a bit too fast), and really makes you believe his mind is slowly rotting away like the body he tries to get rid of.

I feel slow burning films are more effective at building up tension and characters than movies or series that constantly try to surprise you every chance they get. Slow burns let mysteries and thrillers unfold organically. 1922 does that well for the most part, but I do feel that this film could have been shorter by about 20 minutes where the burn turned into a drag.  Still great overall and I highly recommend it next time you want something creepy. Maybe do the same double feature!

Day 49 out, 319 to go....
