The Strangers (2008) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 233

Day 233 of the challenge! Got around to The Strangers (finally), and...it's complicated.  Can't seem to stay away from the horror movies for too long I'm noticing.

As mentioned, I'm not entirely sure what to make of The Strangers. It started off good enough. Those early moments in the house before stuff went bad were so atmospheric and tense! Loved them! But then the movie turned into Liv Tyler crawling around a lawn for what seemed for forever before fizzling out with an ending that is nowhere near as profound as I think it's trying to be.

That leads me to my biggest conflict with The Strangers. Terrifying example of how feeling safe is just a false of security? That something this bad can totally happen to you for no greater reason other than right place, wrong time? Or a gratuitous and sadistic tale that has no real point behind it? Hey, at least it's making me think, right?

Liked:

  • Great atmosphere and tension! The first half chilled me to the bones.

  • The mask choices were perfect. Pretty much all the technical and artistic aspects on the film are great.

Didn't like:

  • Lost it's momentum in it's second half, and never really recovered. The ending especially just fell flat for me.

  • Lame script. Didn't care about the characters (which is essential in a slasher like this) and wanted to know more about the strangers themselves.
