The Big Sick (2017) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 31

Day 31 of the challenge! First month done!! Chose to watch The Big Sick to check off another one of the Oscar nominations. Despite being promised a hilarious comedy, The Big Sick is a very emotional relationship drama with a unique and perceptive cultural twist. Still, I really recommend it!

So like I mentioned, most of the marketing for this movie made it seem like it was some hilarious and insightful comedy for the ages. Since the movie features some truly heartbreaking material like families falling apart and loved ones in comas, I would argue The Big Sick is more of an insightful drama with some really funny moments sprinkled throughout.

Like any good romantic comedy (dramedy?), you grow to really like the characters. You try to will them to stay together with all your might and you get frustrated when they don't. What really separates this one from all the countless other rom coms with that same setup is that The Big Sick is based on Kumail Nanjiani's real life experiences with his wife Emily Gordon. Makes you really appreciate everything that transpires a whole lot more. Add on some great performances from Holly Hunter and Ray Romano, and you have a very likable, feel good (and sometimes sad) comedy/drama/romance!

Day 31 out, 337 to go....
