Day 185 of the challenge! Sicario: Day of the Soldado seems like the perfect film to watch this particular 4th of July, plus it's a damn good thriller.
Liked:
The sense of scope. Sicario feels like a chapter in a much bigger and epic saga, with familiar checkpoints and moments that are comparable to other genre franchises (even the more outrageous ones). Almost like a twisted and dark version of the Hero's Journey.
Isabela Moner is a great! Awesome to see what she can do when given something to work with (unlike the last Transformers movie).
A lot of tension with some great but grounded action. Maybe not as much tension as the last one though (before it started feeling like a saga).
Sicario is a movie where children are used as tools to meet political ends. Hmmm... sound familiar?
Loved loved loved the score!
Didn't like:
- I mentioned that I liked the scope, but I feel if they go even bigger than they did here for the inevitable 3rd Sicario, they might nuke the fridge and ruin the grounded nature of the films. Maybe a little less next time.
- Side plot that merged nicely with the main plot, but ended as a setup for what's next. I could also see them abandoning that particular thread though.
- No redeeming or cathartic release by the end. The movie starts grim and dirty, and ends grim and dirty. A little relief (even a small one), might have been nice.
