Day 336 of the challenge! Still a bit confusing to me, but I get it! How to Train Your Dragon 2 is awesome!
I don’t want to make it seem like I was underwhelmed by the first How to Train Your Dragon (it was a fun adventure, and pretty darn cute to boot), but How to Train Your Dragon 2 just knocks it out of the park! It’s everything I loved from that first one, but doubled.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 also layers it on thematically, and I’m specifically talking about it’s messages regarding animal rights and (strangely) nature preservation. I admit that I may be thinking too much into it…but hey, that’s what I got!
Dragon 2 also keeps the nonviolent “understand your enemy” theme from the first film, and just like the first, I still find it a bit contradictory. Don’t get me wrong, I get a kick out of watching dragons go crazy as much as the next person, but I just can’t help but feel it just goes against the overall message again. When you spend your whole movie preaching nonviolence and understanding, then end things with another fiery giant dragon boss fight, I’m gonna question it. I understand too that sometimes you have no choice but to fight, but that point doesn’t come across clearly here. Might have something to do with the generic main antagonist… Regardless, it’s still fun for sure!
In the particular case of How to Train Your Dragon 2, bigger does seem to mean better (for the most part). It’s somehow more beautifully rendered than the first, and I’m looking forward to watching part 3 when it comes out next year!
It just better not end with yet another giant dragon boss fight is all I’m saying…
