Before We Vanish (2018) - 365 Movie Challenge Day 60

Day 60 of the challenge! Was completely thrown through a loop by Before We Vanish. Marketed as a straightforward, Invasion of the Body Snatchers type of horror/sci-fi, Before We Vanish ended up being more of a cute, art-house romance/sci-fi with a satirical edge to it. I enjoyed it for the most part, but even taking it for what it was, Before We Vanish was too uneven for me. Still worth a watch though! It has plenty to say about how (silly) humans work in our many self-imposed systems, and it made me laugh quite a few times.

Before We Vanish is a huge mishmash (is that a real word?) of genres. At times it can feel like a straight up horror film (that opening sequence was fantastic), while at others it goes straight into awkward, romantic comedy mode, and I mean that as a compliment. I love the time we spend with the film's quirky characters over the course of slow burning build up (some might consider it boring, I don't), but by the time we get to the big event at the end, the film quickly hand waves it away in favor of one more, on the nose message that (for me anyway), derails the film. I can't help but feel that a little more focus and editing would have made a world of a difference as far as balancing the plot and messages goes.

Day 60 out, 308 to go....
